About 20,000 whales are expected to make the journey north along the NSW coastline, with the whales already on their way north from Antarctica to warmer waters.

Those migrating were predominantly humpback whales, migrating from the cold waters of Antarctica to the tropical waters of Queensland, where they breed and have their babies.
